Lobster Diver Says He Was Trapped Inside Mouth of Humpback Whale, Lives to Tell the Crazy Story

A lobster diver got a lot more than he bargained for when he went out for a dive this week.

56-year-old diver Michael Packard claims that he was trapped inside the mouth of a humpback whale during his dive on Friday morning (June 11) off the coast of Cape Cod in Massachusetts.

The moment happened when Packard was heading to the bottom of the seafloor to grab lobsters.

“All of a sudden, I felt this huge shove and the next thing I knew it was completely black,” Packard said in an interview with the Cape Cod Times. “I could sense I was moving, and I could feel the whale squeezing with the muscles in his mouth.”

He continued, “I was completely inside (the whale); it was completely black. I thought to myself, ‘There’s no way I’m getting out of here. I’m done, I’m dead.’ All I could think of was my boys, they’re 12 and 15 years old.”

Originally, Packard thought he was being eaten by a great white shark, but something miraculous happened. 30 to 40 seconds after he was engulfed in the whale’s mouth, he was let out by the whale.

“I saw light, and he started throwing his head side-to-side and the next thing I knew I was outside (in the water),” he said.

Packard updated his community in a post on Facebook. He said, “I was lobster diving and A humpback whale tried to eat me. I was in his closed mouth for about 30 to 40 seconds before he rose to the surface and spit me out. I am very bruised up but have no broken bones. I want to thank the Provincetown rescue squad for their caring and help.”
