Early voting, mail ballots in Beaumont runoff surpass May numbers

The number of mail ballots and early votes received in Beaumont’s mayoral runoff already has surpassed the same figures for the May regular election. And two days still remain in the early voting period, setting the race up to potentially surpass the total number of votes cast in May.

Through Saturday, Beaumont voters cast 8,718 votes and returned 1,307 ballots, for a total of 10,025 people. More than 1,000 voters have turned out each day, with nearly 2,000 turning out on June 8.

In May, 9,301 people voted in the early period and 642 mail ballots were returned for a total of just under 10,000 votes cast before election day.

Beaumont Mayor Becky Ames previously told The Enterprise she wasn’t sure what to expect for turnout, because she can’t remember any citywide runoffs taking place during her nearly three decades in office.

But before Saturday’s early votes were in, she said turnout was looking good.

The candidates vying to fill the open seat she’ll leave behind agree that there’s still work to be done.

Former Ward IV Council member and mayoral candidate Robin Mouton attributed the impressive turnout to grassroots organizing. Candidate and businessman Roy West thanked all the voters who already have turned out.

But they won’t stop until they reach as many people as possible before the polls close on election day.

“My goal is to reach every registered voter in every precinct in hopes of winning their support to cast their vote for Robin Mouton for mayor,” she said.

West had a similar sentiment.

“My team and I will continue to reach out to as many people as possible to encourage people to get out to vote,” he said, adding that he hopes to see a record turnout.
