Srinagar, Jun 12 (UNI) Asserting that security forces still have upper hand though anti-militancy operations witnessed a slight decline due to COVID-19, Director General of Police (DGP) Dilbagh Singh on Saturday said that Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) militants were behind the Sopore attack that left two policemen and three civilians dead.
The DGP made these remarks on the sidelines of wreath-laying ceremony of the policemen, who were killed in the militant attack on a naka party at main chowk in apple township of Sopore in this north Kashmir on Saturday
Police paid rich tribute to the martyred constables, identified as Showkat Ahmad and Waseem Ahmad, at District Police Line (DPL), Srinagar.
'LeT militants were involved in the attack. The attackers have been identified,' the DGP said.
However, he refused to share further movement in this regards. 'A police party was deployed in main chowk of Sopore to enforce COVID lockdown. The police party was attacked by militants. The security forces retaliated and in the exchange of fire, two policemen and several civilians were injured,' he said.
He said both the policemen and three civilians succumbed at a hospital. 'A search operation is going on in the area to nab the attackers. All those who are involved in this attack will be not be spared at any cost,' he added.
Answering a question, Mr Singh said that security forces have upper hand even as militancy has been declining in all the areas. However, he said there is decline in anti-militancy operations due to COVID-19 pandemic.
