Chandigarh, June 11
UT Administrator VP Singh Badnore inaugurated the first material recovery facility–cum-garbage transfer station at the 3BRD sewage treatment plant (STP) site in the Industrial Area, Phase II, here today.
UT Adviser Manoj Parida and Mayor Ravi Kant Sharma were among those present on the occasion.
Two more to come up
Addressing the gathering, Badnore said: “Two more such facilities are being constructed in the city — at the Industrial Area, Phase I, and Sector 25 (West).”
He said the project was one of the components of the comprehensive solid waste management system as per the SWM Rules, 2016, which aim at reducing the time and cost involved in collection and transfer of waste besides generating income by recovering the reusable and recyclable waste. He said that Smart City Ltd had procured nearly 425 small vehicles for door-to-door collection of segregated waste in the city. These vehicles had GPS devices and citizens would know the timing of their arrival through a mobile app being developed under a separate project for tracking these vehicles.
The Mayor said the door-to-door waste collection vehicles would bring segregated waste (dry and wet) to the facility, which had a dedicated space for sorting out dry waste. Dry waste left after the recovery of recyclable material would be transported to the compost plant in Sector 25, Dadu Majra. — TNS
