Serum Institute of India completed 55 years on Saturday and CEO Adar Poonawalla took to Twitter to share the event. He shared a picture of his father Cyrus Poonawalla laying the foundation stone of the company on June 12, 1966.
"Serum Institute of India completes 55 years of existence, supplying billions of doses to 171 countries, saving countless lives, and always ensuring affordability", he wrote. "It is with this ethos in mind we have produced over 300 million doses of COVID-19 vaccines to date", he added.

Pune's vaccine manufacturer has been the flagbearer for vaccination in India and around the world as the vaccine maker tied up with AstraZenca to mass-produce its vaccine, developed in association with Oxford University, called Covishield in India.
Earlier, the Drug Controller has granted permission to the Serum Institute of India (SII) to manufacture the Sputnik COVID-19 vaccine in India. The Pune-based SII is collaborating with Gamaleya Research Institute of Epidemiology and Microbiology, Moscow, for developing Sputnik V at its licensed Hadapsar facility.
