Monsoon to arrive in Delhi earlier than expected, says IMD

The Indian Meteorological Department on Friday said monsoon from the southwest is likely to reach Delhi by June 15, which is about 12 days earlier than expected.

Thursday brought a gusty storm to Delhi with light rainfall, bringing the minimum temperature down to 20.4 degrees Celsius. However, on Friday, mercury went as up as 39 degrees Celsius as the capital saw another hot day.

Light to moderate rainfall is expected in Delhi from Saturday to Wednesday by the IMD as monsoon is progressing quickly and will hit the capital by next week. Parts of Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Odisha, Chattisgarh and some parts of UP will also see some rainfall in the next few days.

“Further, the southwest monsoon is likely to advance over remaining parts of the country outside south Rajasthan and and Kutch region of Gujarat during in the next few days,” the IMD said

With Delhi perspiring under the summer sun on Friday, the city's air quality also reached a 145, or a 'moderate' on the AQI. Experts say the incoming rain and wind will help improve the air quality.
