Aurangabad / Mumbai, Jun 12 (UNI) The 44th GST Council on Saturday approved the recommendations made by the national-level Group of Ministers (GoM) with the participation of Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar regarding waiver or reduction of goods and service tax on medicines, vaccines, equipment, etc, required for treatment of Covid.
Following the recommendation, GST on oxygen and related materials will now be 5 per cent instead of 12 per cent, an official press statement stated.
This reduction in tax on most of the Covid-related materials will make corona treatment cheaper
Mr Pawar has thanked Union Finance Minister and the president and members of the GST Council for the positive response on his recommendation, the statement stated.
Mr Pawar had on May 28 demanded reduction in the cost of medicines, vaccines and medical equipment required for treatment of Covid.
Taking note of Mr Pawar's demand, the Union Finance Ministry had set up a group of ministers from eight states, including Meghalaya Chief Minister Konrad Sangma and Mr Pawar, the next day.
The GoM submitted its report to the Centre recommending reduction of GST within eight days.
Four days later, the GST Council met today and accepted all the recommendations made by the GoM, the statement added.
