Bombay High Court on Friday ordered judicial enquiry in the tragic incident of building collapse in subarban Malwani area of Mumbai after the court took suo moto cognizance of the incident.
The court in it's order while directing to Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), said "Lives of citizens isn't cheap. Accountability needs to be set".
"What is BMC doing about this illegal construction," asks Bombay High Court. The Court ordered action against those responsible for such illegal constructions and criminal action, if required.
The court ordered judicial inquiry in Malad building collapse matter, directing that inquiry be conducted by a commissioner level officer and preliminary report be sbumitted by June 24.
The Court also ordered BMC to explain the entire mechanism of illegal buildings in writing, including "details of how such structures sustained for long and why was the issue not brought to notice by Corporators".
At least 12 people, including eight children, were killed and seven others injured after two floors of a three-storey residential building collapsed on an adjoining single-storey house in Malwani in suburban Mumbai, officials said on Thursday.
Contractor Ramzan Shaikh (34), a resident of Malwani, was picked up by police after the incident for questioning and later placed under arrest, said Dilip Sawant, Additional Commissioner of Police (North Region).
