Pupils from Katlehong School for the Deaf in Gauteng took to the street on Friday to demonstrate their frustration over food served at the institution.

According to the Gauteng education department, the pupils were protesting due to their alleged unhappiness over the choice of food being served, and they demanded there be a change in the leadership at the school.

Spokesperson Steve Mabona said the department's district officials visited the school and managed to defuse the tension.

"The department has committed to attending to all concerns raised by the learners," he added.

"We wish to reiterate our call to everyone in our schooling community to desist from resorting to disrupting schools when they have any concerns," Mabona said.

The department said it has many channels open to engage stakeholders committed to the delivery of quality education - and encouraged people with concerns to utilise the channels accordingly.
