Congress protests in Srinagar against fuel price hike

Srinagar, Jun 11 (UNI) Congress party leaders and workers on Friday held a symbolic protest in the summer capital, Srinagar, against fuel price hike and demanded its rollback.

Scores of Congress leaders and workers hit the streets outside their party office on MA road in Srinagar, demanding rollback of fuel price.

Holding placards, which read, ‘Rollback price hike of petrol and Diesel’, the demonstrators accused the centre of being responsible for the exponential hike in the price of fuel in the country.

The Congress leaders further alleged that they were not given permission to hold a peaceful protest by the district administration, despite assurance that COVID guidelines would be followed strictly. “The protest was a part of nationwide demonstration organized by the Congress to educate the present government in the centre about the suffering of the people due to rise in fuel prices,” a Congress leader said.

“But, unfortunately we were not given permission by the district administration to hold protests. So, we held the protest outside our office in Srinagar,” he added.

He said the centre should immediately rollback the huge taxes that have been imposed on fuel. “Under the UPA government, the tax on petrol and diesel was Rs 9.20 and now it is Rs 32,” he said.

He said the government should stop imposing excise duty on petrol and diesel. Petrol and diesel prices were hiked again on Friday by 31 paise per litre and 28 paise per litre, respectively.
