A 28-year-old woman succumbed to burns after being allegedly set ablaze by her live-in partner following a dispute over a social media post. The victim, identified as Athira, died at Thiruvananthapuram Medical College Hospital on Thursday.
Her live-in partner Shanavaz, 30, on Tuesday evening set her on fire after a disagreement over posting videos on Instagram platform. The incident took place at Edamulackal in Kollam.
As soon as the neighbours heard Athira’s screams, they rushed to their home and called for an ambulance. The couple was rushed to Thiruvananthapuram Medical College on Tuesday night. Athira died at the hospital on Thursday.
The couple were having heated arguments over a video that Athira had posted on social media. According to Athira’s mother’s complaint, Shanavaz allegedly poured kerosene over her and set her on fire with a lighter. The couple has a three-month-old child, said Saiju Nath, police official in-charge for Anchal station.
As per sources, Athira used to frequently share videos on Instagram even after her partner frequently opposed the same.
Based on Athira’s mother’s complaint, a case of murder has been filed against Shanavaz and the probe is underway. He is currently undergoing treatment at Thiruvananthapuram Medical College as he suffered 40 percent burns.
