Hyderabad: To make money and make sure her 4-year-old son does not go to bed hungry after the death of her husband, a woman tries to get herself together by selling vegetables on the street in Hyderabad’s old city with her child next door her walk.
Six months ago, the husband of Reshma Begum, who was a car driver, passed away and since then it has been difficult for Reshma to look after her 4-year-old son and herself.
Reshma told ANI: “I initially worked as a girl at several homes and previously earned money for my family. But as a result coronavirus pandemic and the exclusion implemented due to the disease, I lost my job and could not find anything further. Although it was difficult to feed ourselves during the exclusion, we always had something to survive. But when I was 6 months back, my husband passed away and since then it has been very difficult for me to survive and to look after my son, who is only 4 years old. ”
To get out of her circumstances and try to earn, Reshma decided to sell vegetables by buying a wagon and selling vegetables from street to street.
‘I want to feed my son and make sure he does not go hungry. So I decided to start earning money by selling vegetables on a streetcar. But I do not even have money to buy a wagon. So I borrowed a vegetable cart by mortgaging my ankle straps. I started it two days ago and the last two days I have left nothing behind. I spent even more than I earn now, Reshma said.
She added: ‘Yesterday I was able to earn about R 750 while the vegetable stock I bought was about R500. Out of the Rs 750 I earned, I have to pay a rent of Rs 100 for the vegetable cart and with the rest of the money I have to buy the vegetables to sell the same for the next day, ” Reshma said.
Unable to generate good income by selling vegetables, Reshma is still hopeful for a better tomorrow.
“It’s been two days that I’ve been driving this vegetable cart and earning nothing, but I hope to have something in the coming days so I can feed my son and myself.”
Reshma appealed to the government to help her so that she and her son do not go hungry. She further mentions that several people across the country are experiencing similar or even bigger problems due to a shortage of money.
“Many people, especially during the lock-up and pandemic, have already experienced various problems and cannot feed themselves,” she said.
She said she could feed her son for now and said she was worried about his future
‘I’m more worried about my son’s future, about his education and as he grows, so will his expenses. “I have no idea what to do,” she said.
