England vs New Zealand, 2nd Test Day 2, Highlights: New Zealand relied on two fine knocks by Devon Conway and Will Young to cut the deficit to less than 100 and end on 229/3 after 76.3 overs at the end of the second day of the second Test against England at the Edgbaston Stadium n Birmingham on Friday.
Earlier, Dan Lawrence (81*) and Mark Wood (41) helped to push England to 303/10 in their first innings. With the ball, Stuart Broad then provided the early breakthrough to the hosts by sending back the stand-in skipper Tom Latham cheaply. But a 122-run stand between Conway (80) and Young (82) stabilised things for New Zealand. Ross Taylor ended the day in the middle, batting on 46* with Young dismissed on the final ball before stumps by Lawrence.
After a 81 with the bat, Lawrence shines with the ball too. He scalps his maiden Test wicket off a catch by Pope... the victim? Young on 82, and that's a much-needed wicket for the hosts! Taylor ends the day in the middle on 46*. NZ: 229/3 (76.3 overs)
Will Young and Ross Taylor survived an excellent bowling spell from Stuart Broad and James Anderson. Now, the pressure is back on England again as the two batsmen have put on 51 runs for the third wicket already. England are clearly missing a quality spinner in the middle to control the game. Ollie Robinson's absence is also hurting the visitors. NZ 188/2 after 65 overs
Poor decision from the umpire Richard Illingworth. James Anderson's in-swinging delivery hit Ross Taylor on the front pad but it was clearly going down the leg side. Taylor took his time before reviewing it after discussion with William Young. NZ 154/2 after 55 overs
Will Young gets to his maiden Test half-century amidst a top-class spell from Stuart Broad and James Anderson. Young, replacing an injured Kane Williamson in the Kiwi side, got to the milestone from 132 deliveries. Currently, England frontline bowlers have got their tails up, swinging the ball both ways. The crowd is getting behind them too. England will look for more wickets to restrict this total below 300. NZ 149/2 after 53 overs
Breakthrough for the hosts! A wicket against the run of play. Conway goes for a loose ball from Broad, whips it away aerially and pays the price. Crawley with an easy catch at the deep. The batsman departs on 80. Next up, Ross Taylor. NZ: 137/2 (45.3 overs)
Back for the third and final session of the day! Broad restarts the proceedings against against the well-established pair of newcomers, Young (41*) and Conway (79*). Just like with the ball, New Zealand are acing it with the bat too. NZ: 133/1 (44 overs)
It has been a frustrating session for England. The only chance they got was the catch of Will Young which was dropped by skipper Joe Root at first slip. Young is batting well now, into his 40s, and heading towards his maiden Test half-century. On the other hand, Devon Conway is not making any mistakes. Conway is batting on 78 and heading towards his second Test century. The second session clearly belonged to the visitors. NZ 130/1 after 43 overs
The scoring rate has been low for the last 10 overs. England are trying to put pressure by slowing down the scoring rate, forcing an erratic shot. However, Joe Root released all the pressure in his sixth over as Devon Conway hit him for two boundaries. New Zealand are in good position having lost just one wicket so far. NZ 105/1 after 37 overs
Devon Conway's good run in Test cricket continues as he gets to his half-century from 86 deliveries. After 26 overs, skipper Joe Root has introduced himself into the attack. England need the wicket of Conway here as the last time he batted long, he scored a double century. After getting dropped at first slip, Will Young is finding the middle of the bat as well scoring boundaries. NZ 84/1 after 27 overs
Joe Root makes a mess of a regulation catch at first slip. It was a genuine outside edge off Will Young's bat and Root dropped it on the second attempt even after getting both hands on it. Olly Stone deserved a wicket in that over, a maiden. NZ 52/1 after 17 overs
Devon Conway gets one boundary each from Olly Stone and James Anderson's over. England need more wickets with the new ball to put some pressure on the Kiwis. NZ 52/1 after 16 overs
A good session for both teams. England were able to post 303 in the first innings and later get the wicket of Tom Latham early on in the innings. However, Devon Conway and Will Young ensured there were no more wickets lost in the session. Conway survived after edging the ball to second slip and is batting on 27. NZ 43/1 after 14 overs
Stuart Broad was not happy with the on-field umpires and third umpire. Devon Conway edged it to the second slip and the umpire was not sure that the ball had carried. Broad was not happy with the soft signal as the third umpire needs conclusive evidence to reverse the decision. Meanwhile, Conway has moved into the 20s whereas Will Young is yet to get off the strike. NZ 32/1 after 10 overs
Stuart Broad traps stand-in skipper Tom Latham in front of the stumps. That looked out as soon as it hit the pads. Latham discusses with Devon Conway and chooses not to review. He departs for 6. Will Young is the new batsman in. NZ 15/1 after 5.4 overs
Tom Lathan and Devon Conway open the innings for New Zealand. Both batsmen have scored one boundary each. Conway survived a run out scare on the non-striker's end after Stuart Broad got his hand on the ball on follow through. So far, the ball has not been swinging as expected despite overcast conditions. NZ 13/0 after 4 overs
Trent Boult gets rid of the No.11 batsman James Anderson. DRS works in New Zealand's favour as Anderson is adjudged leg before wicket. He departs for 4 and Boult finishes with four wickets in the innings. Daniel Lawrence runs out of partners as he remains unbeaten for 81. ENG 303 all out after 101 overs
Dan Lawrence has moved into 80s with two boundaries. Lawrence is taking the chance if the ball is pitched in his zone. He is also trusting James Anderson to face Kiwi fast bowlers. Anderson has managed to get off the mark with a boundary with an outside edge going past the slip fielders. Tom Latham has introduced Neil Wagner into the attack replacing Matt Henry. Lawrence is still hopeful of getting to his maiden Test century. ENG 303/9 after 100 overs
Comprehensive dismissal. Trent Boult swings it away from Stuart Broad and the outside edge carries to the wicketkeeper. A four-ball duck for Broad and Daniel Lawrence is running out of partners. Lawrence is batting on 71. ENG 289/9 after 96.2 overs
Matt Henry ends Mark Wood's delightful stay at the crease. Henry bowls it full and swinging in to the stumps. Wood departs for 41 from 80 deliveries. It was a fantastic innings, especially for a No.9 batsman. ENG 288/8 after 95.1 overs
Mark Wood seems to be done playing the role of defending and supporting Daniel Lawrence. Wood is looking for boundaries and is not afraid of swing early on in the day. He has moved to 41, on his way to 2nd Test century. So far, he has hit six boundaries already. Trent Boult and Matt Henry are taking a beating here. ENG 288/7 after 95 overs
