Earlier, Dan Lawrence (81*) and Mark Wood (41) helped to push England to 303/10 in their first innings. With the ball, Stuart Broad then provided the early breakthrough to the hosts by sending back the stand-in skipper Tom Latham cheaply. But a 122-run stand between Conway (80) and Young (82) stabilised things for New Zealand. Ross Taylor ended the day in the middle, batting on 46* with Young dismissed on the final ball before stumps by Lawrence.
After a 81 with the bat, Lawrence shines with the ball too. He scalps his maiden Test wicket off a catch by Pope... the victim? Young on 82, and that's a much-needed wicket for the hosts! Taylor ends the day in the middle on 46*. NZ: 229/3 (76.3 overs)
Will Young and Ross Taylor survived an excellent bowling spell from Stuart Broad and James Anderson. Now, the pressure is back on England again as the two batsmen have put on 51 runs for the third wicket already. England are clearly missing a quality spinner in the middle to control the game. Will Young gets to his maiden Test half-century amidst a top-class spell from Stuart Broad and James Anderson. Young, replacing an injured Kane Williamson in the Kiwi side, got to the milestone from 132 deliveries. Currently, England frontline bowlers have got their tails up, swinging the ball both ways. It has been a frustrating session for England. The only chance they got was the catch of Will Young which was dropped by skipper Joe Root at first slip. Young is batting well now, into his 40s, and heading towards his maiden Test half-century. On the other hand, Devon Conway is not making any mistakes. The scoring rate has been low for the last 10 overs. England are trying to put pressure by slowing down the scoring rate, forcing an erratic shot.
