MUMBAI: The retaining wall and a part of the premises of the
Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC)'s Municipal Capacity and Research (MCMCR) building at Chandivali,
Powai collapsed on Friday morning.
Officials said that prima facie the reason for the crash appeared to be the continuous rain that Mumbai has been receiving.
No injuries were reported in the incident.
The BMC's MCMCR is currently being used as a quarantine centre for those infected by covid and there are around 18 people in it.
However, there was no need to vacate the building as the main structure was not affected, said officials of BMC's L ward.
"We have barricaded the area which has crashed and the mud below it has loosened up as well. Our team will be inspecting the works that need to be done further," said a BMC official.
Activist Anil Galgali said that retaining walls crashing in Mumbai during heavy rain has become common.
"These should hence be inspected before the monsoons in all areas to avoid such incidents," said Galgali.
