Odisha alerts district collectors to prepare for heavy rains and possible floods

Bhubaneswar, Jun 10 (UNI) The formation of a low pressure area over north Bay of Bengal and the advancement of southwest monsoon into Odisha will trigger heavy rains across the state and cause floods in some major rivers.
Special Relief Commissioner P K Jena has alerted all the district collectors and commissioner of
all five municipal corporations to take all precautionary measures as the IMD has predicted extremely heavy and heavy to very heavy rainfall in different districts during June 10 to June 14.
The SRC directed to open the 24X7 control rooms dealing with flood and disaster management,
field level functionaries to be in readiness to meet any eventuality and keep the cyclone and flood centres open in all respects and if necessary evacuate the people from the vulnerable areas.
The Water Resources Department keeping the IMD forecast has convened a preparatory meeting
to be prepared and face the situation in the event of floods in the state likely to be triggered by heavy rains.
All the Urban Local bodies were asked to start dewatering from the areas likely to face water
logging in the event of heavy rains.
The fishermen are advised not to venture into sea from June 10 to June 14 and those already
in the sea have been asked to return to the coast.
Meanwhile , the IMD has issued yellow and orange warnings for several districts of Odisha for
next four days.
Met sources said thunderstorms with moderate to severe lightning and scattered to fairly
widespread light to heavy rains are likely to occur in some places in the next two days.
