IoT based Water Treatment Plant Monitoring using RTU-ADAM-3600

Due to expanding urban population, water distribution, pumping, protection and further more maintaining water quality has become a big problem.

In order to solve this problem Mitsubishi along with Advantech came up with a solution to implement IOT based control system to control and monitor pumping station.

Scope –

201

  • Complete Automation for Water Treatment Plant including SCADA, PLC & HMI is provided by Mitsubishi.
  • Requirement of GPRS based DNP3 RTU from customer which is not a Product range from Mitsubishi.
  • Mitsubishi took the help from Advantech for the offering of the same.

Approach –

RTU Requirement:

  • Collect data from sensors DI, DO, AI
  • Connect to local HMI via Modbus
  • Should have DNP3 protocol
  • 4G connectivity
  • OpenVPN support
  • OHSR needs 210 RTUs & MBR needs 4 RTU
  • All these 214 RTUs should send data to MC Works64 central SCADA on DNP3 protocol using 4G connectivity via OpenVPN

Solution:

  • Studied each & every requirement
  • Started searching for the suitable RTU
  • After a lot discussion we have proposed unique RTU ADAM-3600 which has:
  • 8DI,4DO,8AI which fulfil sensors connectivity requirement
  • RTU supports multiple protocols so it has Modbus & DNP3 protocol support which is the requirement for HMI & Central SCADA connectivity.
  • Has 4G connectivity with external GPRS card
  • Supports OpenVPN so resolved connectivity requirement from OHSR & MBR to MC Works64 central
  • ADAM-3600 is suitable product for all requirements.

Execution –

  • All field IOs are connected to each RTU
  • Data collected at local HMI via Modbus TCP
  • Configured for OpenVPN & DNP3
  • All data from OHSR & MBR t collected at MC Works64 central via OpenVPN using 4G connectivity

202

Result –

  • Single RTU- ADAM-3600 with multiple features is used for this application.
  • Implemented IOT based control system to control and monitor pumping station for Water Treatment plant
