Inside issue 287 of evo

In our latest issue we try out two very special Aston Martins, and put the new BMW M3 up for its first big test against its strongest four-door rival and an iconic sports car alternative.

But first let’s focus on the two extremely special Aston Martins that grace the cover – the 88-unit V12 Speedster and immense one-off Victor. The bespoke, screenless Speedster is a concept car for the road, with almost endless unique detailing and a combination of Vantage and V12 that we’re dearly hoping to see recreated some time soon. In this issue, Dickie Meaden gets to grips with Aston’s most extreme open-top model ever, but not before having a go in perhaps the most insane one of all...

The Victor, part One-77, part retro Vantage throwback, is a commission from Aston’s Q department, designed and engineered to meet the owner’s exacting requirements. This meant that its 7.3-litre naturally aspirated V12 engine threw away the jerky single-clutch automated manual transmission in favour of a six-speed manual. This, combined with its incredible new bodywork, has made it one of the most alluring Aston Martins of all time, and Dickie’s been the lucky one behind the wheel.

Also in this issue is the aforementioned M3 reckoning, with Adam Towler settling the score between the reborn icon and its two toughest rivals. While the new BMW certainly has its fans, the Alfa Romeo Giulia Quadrifoglio consistently outperforms expectations, and with any Porsche 911 included in a performance car group test the result is far from a foregone conclusion.

We also put two four-cylinder sports cars to the test at our home track. With Toyota keen to reaffirm the Supra’s dynamic capability with the new, more poised four-pot version, John Barker pits it against Porsche’s basic 718 Cayman, which shares both a cylinder count and price point, to figure out if, finally, the Supra can live up to the hype.

Jethro Bovingdon also drives a couple of very different, but equally thrilling V8s in our Driven section, plus we also have our first go in the new Cupra Leon 300, Porsche Taycan Turbo Sport Turismo and Maserati’s refreshed hot-rod Quattroporte Trofeo.

Meanwhile, there’s our next ‘Life Through a Lens’ feature, this time focusing on Tim Andrew, we look back at the EP3 Civic Type R in our latest evo ‘Icon’, catch up with all the latest automotive news and check in with our expanding Fast Fleet, saying hello to a particularly interesting new addition.

All this and more is in evo issue 287 – make sure you don’t miss out by grabbing your copy, on sale now at all good retailers and online at magsdirect.co.uk.
