While the onset of monsoon has brought relief from the scorching heat, waterlogging at several places across Navi Mumbai has been reported. Since June 8 night, the city has been receiving intermittent rainfall. The city recorded more than 150 mm average rainfall in the last two days.
A few places in Vashi and Panvel saw waterlogging due to heavy rainfall. Civic employees were seen restarting the pump and generator at low-lying areas where waterlogging was reported.
As per the instructions of the Indian Meteorological Department of extreme rainfall from June 10 to 12, the Municipal Commissioner Abhijeet Bangar immediately called a meeting of all the concerned department heads as well as all assistant commissioners and executive engineers through web communication and instructed all the agencies to be vigilant so that no problem would arise during this period.
In order to avoid loss of life and property due to heavy rains, Bangar directed to take necessary urgent measures at the ward level and no one should leave the municipal area till further orders. A similar written order was also issued immediately. He also directed the relief and rescue teams to be vigilant in places where there is a possibility of landslides and houses near large nallas.
In case of heavy rainfall during high tide, many areas of Navi Mumbai city are below sea level, which sees waterlogging. In such places, Bangar directed that to ensure the necessary back up so that the flapgate in the holding pond as well as the pumping station would not be affected due to power outage.
Bangar also suggested that the citizens of the municipal area should also, be appealed to remain vigilant in the wake of the heavy rains from June 10 to 12.
“The citizens of Navi Mumbai have been advised not to venture in creeks, lakes, streams, mines, places where there is a lot of water, fishermen should not go for fishing in the sea, hilly areas,” said an official from NMMC’s Disaster Cell.
