French Open Quarterfinals: 6 of 8 women quarterfinalists first timers, Coco Gauff also enters last 8 for 1st time

French Open Quarterfinals – Women Quarterfinals French Open: The 2021 French Open quarterfinal line-up in women category has set all time record. As teenager Coco-Gauff made it to the quarters late night, six of the quarterfinalists at the 2021 French Open find themselves in the last eight of a Grand Slam for the first time. Such a record has never ever happened in the Open Era. Previously, the 2001 and 1976 French Opens and the 1969 Australian Open featured five first-time quarterfinalists.

French Open Quarterfinals – Women Quarterfinals French Open: Six Women who have made it to the Quarterfinals of Grand Slam Tennis tournament first time –

Coco Gauff (4th round 2019 Wimbledon, 2020 Australian Open)
Paula Badosa (4th round 2020 French Open)
Tamara Zidansek (2nd round 2019, 2020 Australian Open, 2019 Wimbledon)
Elena Rybakina (3rd round 2020 Australian Open)
Barbora Krejcikova (4th round 2020 French Open)
Maria Sakkari (4th round 2020 Australian Open, 2020 US Open)
Gauff, at 17, and Rybakina, 21, have yet to drop a set. Badosa and Krejcikova, 23 and 25, respectively, are riding nine-match winning streaks. Zidansek, 23, is the lowest-ranked player remaining at No.85, but she’s playing the tournament of her life, having knocked out No.6 seed Bianca Andreescu in the first round.

French Open Quarterfinals – Coco Gauff enters last 8 of a Grand Slam for 1st time
Teenager Coco Gauff was among three women to reach maiden Grand Slam quarter-finals at the French Open on Monday along with 2020 winner Iga Swiakek.

American Gauff, who won the 2018 junior title here, dominated Tunisia’s Ons Jabeur to win 6-3 6-1.

Greece’s Maria Sakkari knocked out last year’s runner-up and fourth seed Sofia Kenin 6-1 6-3, while Barbora Krejcikova thrashed Sloane Stephens 6-2 6-0.

It means eighth seed Swiatek is the highest ranked woman left.

The Polish defending champion, 20, beat Ukraine’s Marta Kostyuk 6-3 6-4 and will face Sakkari on Wednesday.

Kostyuk, 18, was the first to break, but Swiatek quickly imposed herself on the first set, breaking the Ukrainian twice.

Trading breaks in the second set, Swiatek’s serving did all the damage as she gained the upper hand to stay on track to become the first woman since Justine Henin in 2007 to defend the Roland Garros title.
