The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has directed all its department heads to reach out to the family members of employees who succumbed to the coronavirus infection and offer a civic job for one member of the family. The PMC had roped in staff from all departments to implement containment measures across the city.

“Since the pandemic began, the PMC had engaged its staff in containment of Covid-19 in the city by deputing them at Covid hospitals, care centres and other places. A total of 71 civic staff have succumbed to Covid-19 so far. Most of them are from Class 3 and Class 4 category and it is necessary to provide financial support and a source of income to the affected families,” said Additional Municipal Commissioner Rubal Agarwal.

The PMC has so far received 25 proposals to provide jobs for a member of the family of deceased staff. “There are many affected families who have not filed applications yet… thus, the department heads should directly reach out to the affected families and collect information while accepting their application for the job within the next 15 days,” she said.

The civic officer urged various departments heads to personally look into the matter and review it every 15 days. Nearly 800 civic staff have contracted the infection so far and over 600 have recovered.

The civic body offers Rs one crore, or Rs 75 lakh and a job, for family members of civic staff who succumbed to Covid-19. “The PMC has so far distributed a cheque of Rs 25 lakh each to families of 40 deceased staff. This has been done as per the instructions of the municipal commissioner,” said Shivaji Daundkar, in-charge of civic labour welfare department.

The PMC is yet to get the compensation proposal approved in the general body but all party leaders led by mayor Murlidhar Mohol have directed the administration to pay Rs 25 lakh each to the affected families. Before handing over the amount to family members, the civic administration seeks an assurance from family members, on affidavit, that there will not be more claims for compensation.
