- The City of Cape Town has identified 10 suburbs with the lowest vaccination registrations.
- Less than half of those 60 and older have registered for vaccination.
- A recent vaccination drive increased registrations by 1 200.
The City of Cape Town has released a list of the 10 suburbs lagging behind in registrations for the Covid-19 vaccine.
The City said despite a campaign to boost registrations among those 60 and older, less than half had registered by the start of this week.
Phase two of South Africa's vaccine rollout is aimed at vaccinating most people 60 and older by the end of July. So far, around 1.3 million people have received Covid-19 vaccine jabs.
A recent registration drive in which City officials visited 62 Sassa payout points around the metro and assisted residents 60 and older to register on the national Electronic Vaccine Data System (EVDS), saw more than 1 200 elderly people registered.
"As at Monday, 7 June, just more than 46% of all persons aged 60 [and older] had registered to be vaccinated in the metropole. However, despite these successes many more elderly residents need to be registered," Mayco Member for Community Services and Health Zahid Badroodien said in a statement.

The 10 suburbs with the lowest registrations are:
- Nomzamo (4.82%),
- Fisantekraal (6.20%),
- Philippi (6.40%),
- Pella (8.22%),
- Imizamo Yethu (8.63%),
- Delft (10.80%),
- Mfuleni (15.29%),
- Blackheath (17.36%),
- Macassar (18.91%), and
- Blue Downs (20.12%).
"We are appealing to community organisations, youth groups, religious organisations to initiate drives in their communities so that as many elderly are supported and assisted with the registration as possible," Badroodien said.
"We ask clients to be patient and wait for the second SMS before going to the vaccination site. The second SMS may take some time and I encourage our residents to be patient. All those who have registered will be vaccinated," he added.

"Once more doses arrive, we will be able to scale up the services at the vaccination sites, but encourage residents to wait for an SMS (date and place) before going to a vaccination site."
The campaign will continue over the next few weeks in Khayelitsha, Mitchells Plain, Delft, Athlone, Grassy Park and Kuils River.
