A 32-year-old mechanical engineer accused of sexually assaulting at least 12 women was arrested from Mumbai’s Malad area on Monday. The accused, identified as Mahesh alias Karan Gupta, sexually assaulted women using a marriage information website.
For the last four months, the Mumbai police had been looking out for the accused.
According to the police official, the accused created several fake profiles using various names and addresses on marriage information websites in order to lure highly educated women, claiming to be working for a large company. After getting in touch with women, he used to regularly meet and talk at a pub, restaurant or mall. And then would offer to meet them in solitary confinement and sexually assault them.
Deputy Commissioner of Police Suresh Mengade said that the accused used a different mobile number for each crime. He changed his sim every time. To book Ola or Uber taxis, he used different SIM cards and not the phone number registered in his name.
He worked as a hacker some time ago and is an expert in computer technology. But he was using it in the wrong place. There have been complaints that he committed sexual crimes against 12 women, but there still seem to be many more, however, no one complained. The accused has been produced in court and has been remanded in police custody for four days, stated DCP Mengade.
The accused, according to the police, studied at a reputed institute and has worked for big companies in the past.
