Hyderabad: In a shocking incident, an elderly couple in Telangana were allegedly starved to death after their son and daughter-in-law refused their food and even drinking water.
The incident came to light in the Suryapet district on Monday after police arrested Nageshwar Reddy and his wife Lakshmi and charged with culpable homicide that did not amount to murder.
According to police, Nallu Ramachandra Reddy (90) and his wife Anasuyamma (80) died on May 27 and their final rituals were performed by their son in the same day in Thummagudem village in Mothe Mandal.
However, the villagers suspected disorder and alerted the police.
The accused allegedly forced the elderly couple to live in a temporary canvas tent erected on the premises of their house.
Anjaneyulu, inspector of Munagala Circle, said police took action after some locals complained that Nageshwar Reddy was not caring for his parents and refused them food and drinking water, leading to their deaths.
Police exhumed the bodies on May 1 and sent them for autopsy.
He said the autopsy report revealed that the couple did not receive food, which led to dehydration and eventually their death.
“After receiving the post-mortem report, we discussed a case and arrested the accused couple,” the police officer said.
The accused, who were discussed under section 304-II of the Indian Criminal Code (IPC), were brought before a magistrate who arrested them.
