On the first day of unlocking, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has fined more than 3,000 violators from all the 24 municipal wards of Mumbai, for not covering their face in public places.

As per the BMC data, the number of violators fined has been increased by a significant margin, in just two weeks. Earlier on May 23, the BMC had fined 1,828 violators, while on June 7 it had fined 3,434 violators and collected Rs 6.86 lakh in fine amount.

Senior civic officials said that, with restrictions being relaxed, people have started to come out which led to a rise in the number such instances.

"The pandemic is now there for more than a year, it is unfortunate that people still continue to roam around without having their faces covered," said a senior official.

As per the data presented by BMC, 353 violators were fined from F-North (FN) ward (Matunga, Sion, Wadala), followed by the K west (KW) ward (Andheri West, Juhu, Versova) for where 308 violators were fined.

Apart from BMC, the Mumbai Police also fined 1,521 violators on Monday, collecting around Rs 3.04 lakh in fine amounts.
