Editor's note: The Port Huron and Detroit Railroad Historical Society's annual revenue is less than $25,000. The story has been updated.
A former treasurer of the Port Huron and Detroit Railroad Historical Society pleaded guilty to larceny Tuesday.
Steve Harvey, 46, of Mount Vernon, Ohio, pleaded guilty to larceny less than $200, reduced from embezzlement between $1,000 and $20,000. St. Clair County Assistant Prosecuting Attorney Amy Goodrich said Harvey also agreed to pay $10,014.75 in restitution.
He faces a maximum sentence of 93 days in jail.
When questioned by his attorney, Jordan Zuppke, Harvey agreed in March 2020, he was investigated by police for committing fraud while he volunteered for the society.
When questioned by Goodrich, Harvey agreed he was treasurer of the society from July 2018 to March 2020, and had access to the society's checking and savings accounts. He agreed he made purchases using society funds without approval from the society board and for his own personal use.
Port Huron and Detroit Railroad Historical Society President Dan Meinhard has said the stolen funds were a significant portion of the society's annual revenue, which amounted to under $25,000.
Meinhard declined to comment on Harvey's plea hearing.
Harvey is scheduled for a sentencing hearing at 8:30 a.m. July 8 before St. Clair County District Court Judge John Monaghan.
