  • Mamelodi Sundowns coach Manqoba Mngqithi said the Premier Soccer League coach of the year adjudicators need to shed more light on their processes.
  • Mngqithi and his co-coaches Steve Komphela and Rhulani Mokwena were pipped to the post by AmaZulu's Benni McCarthy for the coach of the season gong.
  • Mngqithi though, praised McCarthy for his excellent turnaround effort with AmaZulu.

Mamelodi Sundowns head coach Manqoba Mngqithi said the adjudicators of the Premier Soccer League coach of the season award need to shed light on how they arrived at AmaZulu's Benni McCarthy winning the coach of the season award.

Mngqithi, along with Rhulani Mokwena and Steve Komphela, guided Sundowns to their fourth consecutive league title.

They led for the better part of the season and won with a 13-point gap ahead of second-placed AmaZulu.

The coach of the year award was won by McCarthy.

Mngqithi said feedback from the adjudicators is necessary as they may use it to better themselves for their title defence next season.

"Maybe the adjudicators can share a better light on the matter because when you talk about coach of the season, you're dealing with the end product," Mngqithi said.

"When in the season did we not do well not to qualify for the coach of the month awards? We dominated from the start of the season right up until the end. However, we only got the coach of the month award right at the end.

"Maybe there's something we didn't do right, and we may need to hear from the adjudicators and that may help us to improve our standing next season.

"To win the league with a 13-point gap with only one loss all season, only 14 goals conceded and 49 scored. Maybe there's something we didn't do."

Mngqithi's praise for McCarthy was effusive, with the former Golden Arrows coach who won the MTN8 in 2009 saying that AmaZulu should have also been given an award for the most improved side in the league.

Mngqithi though said he was also happy with the fact that they've had a collective trophy in the form of the league to show for their efforts.

"I would rather not win the coach of the season award if it means it is not going to come with a trophy," Mngqithi said.

"The bigger fish was always to win the league and I'm very happy that the club has done that. I'm also very happy with the work that Benni has put in at AmaZulu.

"He transformed them from a relegation-threatened team into Champions League material. You can never take that for granted.

"I think there should have been an award from the PSL with regards to the most improved team because their improvement from last season until now is remarkable."
