Major internet outage right now Featured

As we write, the internet is experiencing a major outage across a wide variety of platforms.

Note that this report will be regularly updated as further information becomes available.

Multiple news sites, such as BBC, New York Times, and locally The Age and Sydney Morning Herald are all either down or only loading text. Even then, the status randomly changes from loading only text to 503 errors (service unavailable).

In addition, Twitch.tv was reporting “fast.ly error: unknown domain.”

Currently, downdetector is showing pretty-well everything is down - this is a snapshot of the opening page as we see it.

As an amusement twitch seems to be struggling to satisfy advertising agreements and according to one user, they received 15 adverts in a row!

The latest we’ve seen is that it appears to be a CDN (content distribution network) problem - note the fast.ly observation in the image above as well as the twitch comment, as any site a user currently open in a tab seems to be OK, although for this writer, that was not true for TheAge.

A search of Twitter also suggests that ‘experts’ are blaming one or more CDNs.

And as we close, things are starting to return… reddit, for instance, seems to be back, but very slow.

[update 9:11pm] BBC reported a few minutes ago that Fast.ly was "currently investigating potential impact to performance with our CDN services."

More as we know it.
