Covid-19: 5 074 new cases, deaths increase by 45

South Africa recorded 5 074 new Covid-19 infections by Sunday, 5 June and 45 more Covid-19-related deaths, taking the death toll to 56 974.

Of the 45 deaths, 16 were recorded in the Free State, seven in Gauteng, one in KwaZulu-Natal, 15 in the Northern Cape and six in the Western Cape.

"We convey our condolences to the loved ones of the departed and thank the healthcare workers who treated the deceased," Health Minister Zweli Mkhize said in a statement.

Mkhize added that, as of Sunday, the country recorded a total of 1 696 564 Covid-19 cases.

Gauteng recorded the most active cases with 22 065, followed by the Northern Cape with 9 249 and the Free State with 9 119.

The recovery rate is 93%, with 1 578 033 recoveries.

To date, 11 876 594 tests have been completed, with 35 821 tests conducted since the department's last report.

The number of people vaccinated is 1 343 433. Of those, 863 665 are Pfizer vaccine doses, administered under Phase Two of the national vaccination rollout.
