Major shift in Covid vaccination policy, PM Modi says Centre to supply free vaccines to states for 18 years and above

The arrangement that had kicked in from May 1 in which 25% was procured by states from vaccine makers will no longer be in place. the Centre will do it on behalf of the sates and supply it to them for free.

In a major shift to the vaccination policy, the Centre has now taken full responsibility and decided to procure 75% of the stocks from manufacturers and supply it for free to states to vaccinate those above 18 years from June 21.

The arrangement that had kicked in from May 1, in which 25% was procured by states from vaccine makers, will no longer be in place. The Centre will do it on behalf of the sates and supply it to them for free.

Private hospitals can continue to procure 25% from vaccine makers, the PM said. He added that the service charges have been capped at Rs 150 per dose for private hospitals.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed the nation today and said that the fight against the second coronavirus wave is still underway.

Terming it as the biggest epidemic in 100 years, the PM said that India has created a new health infrastructure to take on the coronavirus pandemic.

Speaking about vaccination, PM said that the supply will increase manifold in near future. He said that India launched two made-in-India vaccines in less than a year.

On vaccination policy, the PM said that it was decided that those who were vulnerable would be given the vaccines first.

The PM said that the situation would have been different if the frontline health workers had not been vaccinated first.

He said that the Centre had started preparations for vaccinating even as the research was going on.

He cautioned everyone to observe Covid protocol as it is still the biggest weapon to stay safe from the virus.
