Chandigarh, June 5

A local court has denied bail to 40-year-old Takdir, a resident of Kalka, who was allegedly arrested with the commercial quantity of ganja.

According to the FIR, around 20.5-kg ganja was found in his possession.

The counsel of the accused argued that the accused has been in custody since the date of the arrest. He argued the ganja seized was marginally more than the commercial quantity (20 kg).

Public prosecutor JP Singh opposed the application on the basis of the gravity of the offence. He argued that the quantity of ganja recovered from the applicant and co-accused was commercial in nature. After hearing the arguments, the court said it was a settled law that mere long custody did not make the accused entitled to a bail.

The bail petition of the applicant has also been dismissed by the High Court earlier. The contraband seized was commercial quantity. Thus, the court was not inclined to allow the bail application. — TNS
