The Nigerian government indefinitely suspended microblogging site Twitter’s all operations in the country on Friday.
The decision came two days after Twitter removed a post by Nigeria’s President Muhammadu Buhari, which threatened to punish those responsible for recent attacks on electoral offices and police stations and mentioned the country’s 1960s civil war that killed 1 million people. Twitter removed the post saying that Buhari’s post had violated Twitter’s abusive behaviour policy.
As per media reports, Nigerian Information Minister Lai Mohammed said the government had acted because of “the persistent use of the platform for activities capable of undermining Nigeria’s corporate existence”.
Twitter, in a statement, said that they are investigating its “deeply concerning” suspension of operations by the Nigerian government and “will provide updates when they know more.”
