Today marks a legendary day in the history of India. The founder of the Maratha Empire, Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj was formally crowned as the Chhatrapati (emperor) of his realm at Raigad on 6 June, 1674 for the first time.

This day in 1964 marked the beginning of Hindavi Swarajya in India. On this day, Shivaji Maharaj was given the title of ‘Shakakarta’ which means ‘founder of an era’ in English and ‘Chhatrapati’ (paramount sovereign). He also took the title of Haindava Dharmodhhaarak (protector of the Hindu faith) during his coronation ceremony.

As India marks this anniversary amidst a lockdown due to the pandemic, many Indian politicians took to social media to greet fellow citizens on this historic day.

Home Minster Amit Shah took to Twitter to extend his wishes on the coronation anniversary. He wrote, "Greetings on 'Shiv Coronation Day', a symbol of justice, religion, welfare, good governance and nationality. The epoch-making Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj established Hindvi Swarajya on this day in 1674 by defeating the cruel Mughal rulers with his incredible might. Salutation to such a unique religious protector."

BJP leader, Sambhaji Chhatrapati, who is a descendant of of king Shivaji himself, took to Twitter to remember and honour the Chhatrapati.

NCP Chief, Sharad Pawar wrote on Twitter, "Shiv Rajyabhishek Day inspires self-government, sovereignty and freedom. On this auspicious day, let us resolve to follow the path of Surajya creation intended by Maharaj. Happy Shiv Rajyabhishek Day!"
