Due to heavy rains last year, there is shortage of quality soyabean seeds

Nagda (Ujjain district, Madhya Pradesh): Area MLA Dilip Singh Gurjar has asked state government to provide improved soyabean seeds to farmers as they are unable to get them.

“State government says there is no shortage of improved seeds but farmers are running from pillar to post to get quality soyabean seeds,” he said. Due to heavy rains last year, there is shortage of quality seeds.

According to Gurjar, current price of soyabean seeds in open market is Rs 10,000 per quintal. Soybean crop is sown in 95,000 hectares in the region.

Due to the almost double price of soyabean seeds in the market, farmers are in a fix. “Seed Corporation is giving 60 kg seeds to every farmer, which is inadequate,” Gurjar said.

The Agriculture Department and Agricultural Credit Committees say that they have sent demand letters to government but seeds have not been provided.

Gurjar said government should provide good quality seeds of soyabean, urad , maize besides fertiliser to farmers before rainy season starts.
