I would drop 8 more lbs to 170 and then you can have a nice long lean bulk from a lean position

Sorry mate thought you meant you weighed 178. I'd start lean bulking now If I was you. Good year of lean bulking and an extra 20-25lbs on you and then cut and you will be in a good position

I would maintain and get into a good routine.

Once you can no longer progress with newbie gains in strength, say it doesn’t go up for like a month then a very slow bulk.

Definitely don’t need to cut 5’10 160 lbs

I'd start with a lean bulk.

You don't have much muscle mass, so if you cut, you'll end up looking very skinny. There's just not much at all to cut down to.

Not trying to be mean, just my honest opinion so you can make the best decision.

I'd keep the bulk slow and steady, no more than 2-3 pounds a month, and keep at it for at least 6 months.

You seem to be relatively new to lifting, so in the beginning, first few months of your bulk, you might actually start looking better (and not just fatter, from being in a calorie surplus), as you put on more muscle with very little body fat gain. In the beginning, you might even do a slight recomp if calories aren't too high.

Just don't make the mistake of bulking for only like 3 months. Lots of beginners do this. Building muscle takes time, losing fat can happen MUCH quicker.

I'm not saying because I did it, it's right, but when I first started I stayed in a calorie surplus, or "bulked" for about a year and a half before I even thought about cutting.

I gained 45 pounds in a year and a half (bulked HARD, but it worked out), and then cut down and lost 25 pounds. So ended up being about 20 pounds heavier but slightly leaner.
