An on-duty sub inspector allegedly shot himself dead with his service pistol at a police station here on Friday, officials said.

The deceased, Rahul Singh, belonged to Agra district in Uttar Pradesh and lived with his family, they said.

The 31-year-old went to the terrace of Pandav Nagar police station, where he was posted, and killed himself, said Priyanka Kashyap, Deputy Commissioner of Police (East).

No suicide note was recovered from the spot, police said.

Sparks were seen at the wheels of a train near Siliguri in north Bengal on Friday morning, triggering panic among the passengers, officials said.

The incident happened when the Sealdah-Alipurduar special train was near Atal Tea Estate in Naxalbari, they said.

The guard of the train saw the sparks and smoke at the wheels of an AC compartment and alerted the driver, they said.

The driver informed the Bagdogra station and was told to get the train there at a slow speed, officials said.

In the meanwhile, the panic-stricken passengers started scrambling to get out of the compartment.

Police in Muzaffarpur have arrested three liquor mafias accused of kidnapping a young girl from a Bihar village, gang raping her and then mutilating the body before dumping it in river.
