UP: Five children of a Gonda family drown in pond

LUCKNOW: Five children of a joint family drowned in a pond in Gonda on Thursday.
The deceased, identified as Chanchal (8), Shivakant (6), Ragini (8), Prakashini (10) and Muskaan (12), had gone to take clay from the pond when the accident occurred. The police said that one of the children might have slipped into the pond and others drowned when they tried to rescue him.
SP, Gonda, Santosh Mishra said that the incident took place in Rasoolpur village under the Khondare police station. Family members of the children told the police that they had gone to the pond to take clay. By the time villagers could reach the spot after hearing cries of the children, all of them drowned, he said, adding that “divers were pressed into service to retrieve the bodies.”
