MADURAI: Ministers I Periyasamy, PTR Palanivel Thiagarajan and P Moorthy on Friday released water from the Vaigai dam for irrigation of 45,000 acres of land in Madurai and Dindigul districts. It would also benefit agricultural land in Sivaganga and Ramanathapuram districts.
It was for the first time in 12 years that water was being released from the Vaigai dam on time in the first week of June, said Periyasamy.
Nine hundred cusecs of water would be released for 45 days. After that, water would be released in a turn system for 75 days.
The minister said the Tamil Nadu government would consider the long-pending demand of the farmers to desilt the Vaigai reservoir.
