South Africa recorded 5 361 new Covid-19 infections by Thursday and 54 more Covid-19-related deaths, taking the death toll to 56 765.

Of the 54 deaths, four were recorded in the Eastern Cape, 12 in the Free State, 17 in Gauteng, four in KwaZulu-Natal, three in the Northern Cape and 14 in the Western Cape.

"We convey our condolences to the loved ones of the departed and thank the healthcare workers who treated the deceased," Health Minister Zweli Mkhize said in a statement.

He added that, as of Thursday, the country recorded a total of 1 680 373 Covid-19 cases.

Gauteng recorded the most active cases with 19 877, followed by the Northern Cape with 8 596 and the Free State with 8 503.

The recovery rate stands 93.3%, with 1 567 635 recoveries recorded.

To date, 11 757 176 tests have been completed.

The total number of people vaccinated stands at 1 193 352.
