Benaulim MLA calls for extension in curfew

Margao: COVID care centres were opened at Colva on Friday and Majorda on Thursday, with the aim of housing asymptomatic COVID patients. Benaulim MLA Churchill Alemao, meanwhile, also appealed to the Chief Minister for an extension in curfew and restrictions currently in place across the state.

The Colva COVID care centre has been set  up at Colva church hall. It was opened at the hands of Alemao in the presence of  South Goa COVID nodal officer Dipak Dessai, Cansaulim PHC in-charge Dr Socorro Quadros, deputy collector John Fernandes and Salcete BDO Amitesh Shirvoikar.

The centre has the capacity to house around 25 patients; three nurses and a doctor will be providing healthcare service at the centre.

Speaking to the media after the opening of the centre, Dessai said, “There will be a doctor and nurses at this facility. We hope that the number of COVID cases gets reduced and there are less patients and

those that come here, we hope that they return home healthy.”

“In the villages of Benaulim, Seraulim and Colva, there are around 123 active cases at the moment. I request the patients to get admitted here so we can keep a close watch on them. If  condition worsens, we can shift the patient to the step-up hospital in Cansaulim and if required to COVID hospital,” said Dr Quadros.

Alemao, meanwhile, asked the Chief Minister to extend the curfew restrictions currently in place in the state.

“The carnival should not have happened and because of this people from outside the state came and because of which COVID cases began to rise. There have been so many deaths. My only appeal to the CM is to extend the restrictions which are currently only till June 7, because the situation is still not out of danger,” he said.

Earlier, on Thursday, Nuvem MLA Wilfred D’Sa  opened a COVID care centre for the villages in his constituency at the IPA (Provedoria), managed by the Wilfred D’Sa  Charitable Society.
