The Kalyan-Dombivli Municipal Corporation (KDMC) ran a 'mask-up' drive to promote precautionary measures against COVID-19 in Kalyan and raise awareness about safe practices.
With the rising cases in April, the KDMC authorities started a drive against people not wearing masks on roads and public places. Even after the cases of started declining, the drive was on across the 10 different wards in the corporation. The drive was carried out under the leadership of ward officers. "A team used to roam around in the jurisdiction of their respective wards. They would be accompanied by a police team and action would be taken against by levying a fine of Rs 5,000", an official said.
KDMC has fined around 4585 people for not wearing masks and collected a fine of Rs 22. 93 lakhs.
Madhvi Pophale, Public relation officer, KDMC said, "Regular announcements were made to wear masks, as the threat of the virus still hovers upon us. We ask the citizens to wear masks for their safety. Our aim is to bring down the number of cases, and spread awareness". "Taking safety and precautionary measures is every citizen's responsibility", she added.
