Hyundai Creta has been the best selling mid-size SUVs since it was launched in the Indian market. However, this time, the Creta might have made history by being the best selling vehicle in May 2021. Usually, the best selling vehicle is always of Maruti Suzuki. The Creta sold more units than the Maruti Suzuki Alto, Baleno, Swift and the Dzire.
Hyundai sold 7,527 units of the Creta in May’21. This is an increase of 134.3 percent when compared to the sales figure of May’20 which were just 3,212 units. Still, the sales figures were less than the April’21 which were 12,463 units. The Creta was able to beat the rest of the vehicles of Maruti Suzuki because the production at Maruti Suzuki’s production plants was halted because of annual maintenance. Maruti Suzuki sold 7,005 units of Swift in May’21. When compared, they only sold 597 units of Swift in Mmay’20. The sales were significantly low by 61.8 percent when compared to April’21. The largest automobile manufacturer sold 18,316 units of Swift in April’21. Maruti Suzuki was hugely impacted because of the shutdown.
The third best selling car was the Kia Sonet which was launched last year and became an instant hit in the compact SUV segment. Kia sold 6,627 units of Sonet in May’21 whereas in April’21 the sales figures were 7,724 units. This is a decrease of 61.8 percent as compared to April’s sales.
Tata Motors sold 6,439 units of Nexon, making it the fourth best selling vehicle. The Indian manufacturer sold just 623 units of Nexon in May’20. It is an increase of 933.5 percent in terms of year on year sales. When compared to April’21 sales, the sales decreased by 14.2 percent as Tata sold 7,724 units of Nexon in April of 2021.
The fifth best selling vehicle was the Maruti Suzuki Dzire. The manufacturer sold 5,819 units in May’21 as compared to 14,073 units in April of 2021. The sales decreased by 58.7 percent on monthly basis. When compared to last year’s sales, Maruti Suzuki sold 2,215 units in May’20. The sales increased by 162.7 percent on yearly basis. The Dzire is the only sedan in the top 10 cars in terms of sales depicting that demand of Dzire is still strong even when the trend of compact SUVs and SUV are increasing.
