Arvind Kejriwal to review preparation for third wave today

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has called two meetings on Friday to discuss preparations for the possible third wave of coronavirus. “The CM will meet the expert committee at 11 am and the  preparation committee at 3 pm, the CM’s office said in a tweet. 

The Delhi government had on 27 May set up a 13-member committee to prepare an action plan for a possible third wave of COVID-19 after assessing the current status and projected requirement of the health infrastructure such as hospitals, oxygen plants and drug supplies in the city.

Another eight-member expert committee was set up to devise a strategy for mitigation and management of the third wave of COVID-19.

SAD accuses Punjab govt of selling vaccines to private hospitals

SAD chief Sukhbir Singh Badal on Friday accused the Punjab government of selling COVID-19 vaccine to private hospitals.

“The COVID-19 vaccine is available but the Punjab government is selling it to private hospitals. Punjab government is getting vaccines at Rs 400 but selling them to private hospitals at Rs 1060. And private hospitals is administering vaccine on higher prices,” he added.

India’s vaccine production capacity can be ‘game-changer’: US

The US State Department on Friday said that India’s vaccine manufacturing capacity can be a “game-changer” beyond its borders.

“The increased manufacturing capacity in India, volume of capacity that is – has the potential to be a game-changer beyond India’s borders and that’s precisely why this arrangement was reached and announced in the context to Quad,” said spokesperson Ned Price.

“We’ve spoken of focus on increased manufacturing in India but also bilateral support provided as means to help. A 100 million dollars, hundreds of millions of dollars in total – half-billion dollars, I believe, 500 million – been put towards this, including by the US government.

“Secretary Blinken, Gayle Smith, Kurt Campbell and others have led effort to galvanize private sector to chip in. Together between US government contributions nd private sector contributions, we’ve seen half a billion dollars in support go to India in its time of need,” he added.

Academics write open letter to Opposition on preparations for COVID-19 third wave

More than 185 academics, including noted historians Romila Thapar and Irfan Habib and economist Kaushik Basu, have written an open letter to the Opposition parties suggesting to use their influence to ensure the Central and state governments prepare for a possible third wave of the coronavirus.

Noting that the visuals of deceased lying on roads during the second wave and bodies floating in rivers have pricked the world’s collective conscience, they said it was heartwarming that amidst the pandemic, most political parties are “willing to work in a non-partisan manner in the peoples’ interest”.

“Yet, despite the offer to cooperate and work with the Union government, it is shocking that the Government of India has neither welcomed the suggestions, nor created a truly national task force comprising all parties, state governments, experts and civil society to tackle the unprecedented situation India is facing,” it said.
