Uttar Pradesh Governor Anandiben Patel and Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath interacted with urban and local bodies' representatives yesterday and asked them to encourage more people to take the coronavirus vaccine. Interacting with mayors, chairmen and councillors of local bodies through video-conferencing, they also asked them to ensure arrangements for pure drinking water, sewage management, roads and drainage in their respective areas, said an official release.  (PTI)

Paramount Pictures temporarily shut down production on the British set of Tom Cruise's seventh Mission: Impossible film yesterday after someone tested positive for coronavirus. "We have temporarily halted production on Mission: Impossible 7 until June 14th, due to positive coronavirus test results during routine testing," a Paramount spokesperson said in a statement. (AP)

Top American lawmakers, industry groups and Indian Americans have welcomed the decision of the Biden Administration to send 25 million doses of coronavirus vaccines to other countries, including India. "This is a good first step. I continue to urge the administration to ramp up its global vaccine distribution with a plan that considers urgent need and regional priorities and I look forward to the next batch being allocated quickly," Senator Mitt Romney said yesterday.
"Countries like Taiwan and India are in desperate need of COVID-19 vaccines, so I'm pleased that the administration is moving into the implementation stage of its global vaccine distribution plan. US vaccines are far safer and more effective than those coming out of China or Russia," Romney said.(PTI)

Pune district of Maharashtra reported 1,864 new coronavirus cases yesterday, taking its tally to 10,19,028, while 58 more fatalities pushed the toll to 17,042, a health department official said. A total of 3,005 patients were discharged from hospitals in the district during the day, he said. (PTI)

Coronavirus in India LIVE Updates | Assam reports 4,309 new COVID-19 cases, 46 more deaths

Assam reported 4,309 new COVID- 19 cases and 46 more deaths yesterday, pushing the caseload to 4,24,385, the National Health Mission (NHM) said. The state has so far reported 3,523 deaths, the NHM bulletin said. Till now, 1,347 more COVID-19 patients have died, but the government's Death Audit Board has not included them in the tally of deaths caused by the virus as they had other ailments too. With the detection of 4,309 coronavirus positive cases against the testing of 1,07,075 samples yesterday, Assam has reported a positivity rate of 4.02 percent for the day, the bulletin said. Currently, the state has 50,534 active cases. (PTI)

The Odisha government has started preparations to combat the possible third wave of COVID-19 pandemic, which, experts said, may affect people of different age groups along with children as anticipated, officials said. The effects of the third wave will depend on three aspects -- vaccination, mutation of the virus and adherence to COVID-19 protocols, said Dr Ajay Parida, the director of the Institute of Life Sciences (ILS). Coronavirus in India LIVE Updates | Punjab sees 91 deaths, 2,206 fresh cases

With 91 more COVID-19 related deaths, the toll in Punjab reached 14,840 yesterday, while 2,206 fresh infections took the tally to 5,74,114, according to a medical bulletin. The number of active cases dropped to 28,673 from 31,133 on Wednesday. The state's positivity rate marginally dropped to 3.21 percent from 3.33 percent the day before. With 4,512 recoveries from the infection, the number of cured persons reached 5,30,601, according to the bulletin. The number of active cases declined to 1,135 from 1,251 on Wednesday, as per the bulletin. With 226 patients being discharged after recovering from the infection, the number of cured persons reached 58,502, it stated. (PTI)
