Chandigarh, June 3

As many as 7,164 trees and 52,901 shrubs will be planted by the local MC during the monsoon in the city.

The drive will start on the occasion of World Environment Day on June 5. The officials said some of the trees and shrubs that could not be planted during the last season had also been included in the current tally for the season.

According to Superintending Engineer (Horticulture) Krishanpal Singh, saplings of trees such as mahogany, Arjun, pilkhan and others that already exist in the city, will be planted during the drive. He said these were available in the nurseries of the MC and did not have to spend money to buy them.

However, Rs1 crore will be spent on buying shrubs. Trees and shrubs will be planted on road berms, community centres, parks, gardens, N-choe, rehabiliation colonies and Sehaj Safai Kendras.

The SE said in addition to this, Forest Department, UT Administration, PU, PGI, schools and colleges will have their separate plantation drive during the monsoon.

The different wings plant saplings every season. Not all of them survive. Since 2019, the MC had been growing fruit-bearing trees.
