Move with effect from 2011 will help aspiring school teachers, says Centre

The Central Government on Thursday extended the validity of Teachers Eligibility Test (TET) qualifying certificate for life from seven years previously

This takes retrospective effect from 2011.

“This will be a positive step in increasing the employment opportunities for candidates aspiring to make a career in the teaching field,” said Education Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal.

‘Employment opportunity’

This announcement would bring relief to several TET certificate holders who earlier couldn’t apply for the recruitment due to expiry of its validity.

State governments/UTs will revalidate/issue fresh TET certificates to candidates whose seven-year eligibility period has elapsed, added Pokhriyal. TET is one of the essential qualifications for appointment as a teacher in schools.

The Guidelines dated February 11, 2011 of the National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE) laid down that TET would be conducted by the State Governments and the validity of the TET Certificate was 7 years from the date of passing TET.

During the 50th Meeting of the General Body last year the NCTE took this decision. However, it got the approval of the Government on Thursday.
