BHOPAL: Most of the repeat cases of Covid-19 are being reported in recovered patients having comorbidities. The recurrence of infection in people recovered from coronavirus†disease could create a serious challenge in tackling the pandemic as the recovered patients could be a source of virus spread in society.
Dr Subroto Mandal, cardiologist, said, "Repeat cases of corona infection show that antibodies have not been formed or its formation is very slow in patients. And it is happening with patients with comorbidities and obesity. In the second Corona wave, cases of repeat infection increased a little bit in comparison to the first wave. In the first wave, repeat cases were very few but now such cases are coming into notice."
Dr AK Shrivastava, medical superintendent of TB Hospital, said, "Patients having comorbidities already are immune suppressed and so they always have chances of contracting infection a second time. Therefore people who have recovered from the infection should not take it for granted that they would not be infected a second time as they have developed immunity. Just because of comorbidities, there are always chances of them getting infected even for the second time. And such cases are coming to the fore."
Increase in repeat cases are in proportion to high number of corona patients during the second wave, during the first Covid-19 wave the corona cases were low and so were the recurrence of infection, said the doctor. In the second wave, around 10 per cent repeat cases are coming while in the first wave, hardly one or two cases were reported, Shrivastva added.

There are evidences that a positive viral ribonucleic acid test in some of the discharged Covid-19 patients after recovery shows that recurrence of Covid-19 after recovery should be differentiated from secondary medical conditions such as super infection, pulmonary embolism, or persistent ribonucleic acid virus that can be discovered in ?respiratory specimens in clinically cured Covid-19 patients.
