CHENNAI: Fresh cases in Tami Nadu continued to drop to 25,317 cases on Wednesday taking the state infection tally to 21.48 lakh. While the state recorded 483 deaths, at least 32,263 were discharged from the active cases registry, leaving 2.8 lakh active Covid-19 cases.
Coimbatore reported 3,061 new cases compared to 3,332 cases it logged on Tuesday. Chennai reported 2,217 cases, against the 2,467 fresh infections it reported on Tuesday. Three other western districts – Erode (1,488), Salem (1,290) and Tirupur (1,252) – reported more than 1,000 cases. While fresh cases have declined in Erode and Tirupur, cases in Salem have increased. The district reported 1,140 cases on Tuesday. At least 18 districts reported more than 500 new cases.
Sivaganga (211) followed by
Perambalur (236) reported the least number of cases.
All districts barring Theni and Sivaganga reported deaths on Wednesday, when the cumulative toll tally breached the 25,000 mark (25,205). Highest number of deaths were reported in Chennai (77), followed by Coimbatore (38) and Chengalpet (34). At least 17 districts in the state reported deaths in double digits. Between May 23 and June 1, Chennai reported at least 86 deaths a day and Chengalpet 40 deaths a day.
Though the average case fatality rate for May was 1.1%,
Vellore reported 2.8%, pushing the overall fatality rate of the district to 1.8%. Salem (1.9%) and Kancheepuram (1.7%) reported high fatality rate for May.
The overall fatality rate for the districts were 1.5% and 1.6% respectively. “There is an increase in death among people without comorbid conditions. In January around 18% of deaths were among people who did not have comorbid conditions. It has now increased to 26%,” public health officials said.
On an average the state tests at least 1.6 lakh people every day.
