THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The state assembly on Wednesday unanimously passed a resolution demanding that the Centre should provide Covid-19 vaccines free to all citizens in a time-bound manner. The opposition supported the resolution but locked horns with the government over "irregularities" in announcing Covid fatalities.
Health and family welfare minister Veena George moved the resolution in the backdrop of acute shortage of vaccines in the state. It also sought timely distribution of vaccines. "In order to fight Covid-19, we need to provide free universal vaccination, which will ensure that all sections of the society are protected from the virus," she said.
The first wave of Covid-19 had weakened the economy and now the country is facing the second wave. "If we could take necessary steps for speeding up the vaccination, it would help the economy also," she said.
The crisis can be overcome only if the governments at all levels work with utmost importance. The most important factor is to raise defence against the pandemic, and for this, universal vaccination is important, the resolution said. There is an effective system in the state to provide Covid-19 vaccine to all and the pandemic can be dealt effectively once the vaccine doses are available, it said.
Supporting the resolution, opposition leader V D Satheesan said the Union government had cheated the people of the country by handing over the monopoly of production of vaccines to two companies.
"It is a grave mistake on the part of the Union government to entrust the decision on prices of vaccines to the companies. The governments in the past had dealt with similar crises and had then provided vaccines free of cost, because of which diseases like smallpox could be effectively eradicated," he said, adding that the state government should strive to bring all like-minded states together on the matter.
The assembly had unanimously passed a resolution seeking the recall of Lakshadweep administrator Praful Khoda Patel on Tuesday.
