Former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin asked a judge on Wednesday for probation after being convicted for the murder of George Floyd, while the prosecution said his crime "shocked the Nation's conscience" and he should be imprisoned for 30 years.

Prosecutors are seeking a 30-year sentence for the former Minneapolis police officer convicted of murder in George Floyd's death, but a defense attorney is asking that Derek Chauvin be sentenced to probation and time already served, according to court documents filed Wednesday. Chauvin is scheduled to be sentenced June 25 following his conviction on murder and manslaughter charges. Judge Peter Cahill previously ruled there were aggravating factors in Floyd’s death.
Chauvin, who was convicted of murdering George Floyd, faces up to 40 years in prison. His attorney argues the ex-cop has spent enough time locked up.
Crews have removed concrete barriers and other items from a Minneapolis intersection that became a sprawling memorial to George Floyd. The intersection has been closed to traffic since the 46-year-old Black man was killed there last year. (June 3)

Some activists oppose the city's effort to reopen the intersection at Chicago Avenue and 38th Street to vehicles. It has been closed off since the murder, a kind of autonomous zone in the middle of the city known as George Floyd Square.
