BHUBANESWAR: A city-based entrepreneur's wife was stalked and wounded in a knife attack by an unidentified man near CRPF Square in posh Nayapalli locality here on Monday.
The daylight attack took place when Anshu Gupta, the injured woman, was walking to a nearby vegetable market during lockdown relaxation hours (7am to 11am).
This was the third such attack on Gupta in the last eight months. In the previous two attacks, her chain and cellphone had been snatched. Police are trying to ascertain motive behind the fresh attack on her.
The armed goon slashing Gupta's neck and hand was captured in a nearby CCTV camera. She was discharged from a hospital following treatment of her bruises.
"We are verifying the CCTV footage and trying to identify the accused. Though the woman was attacked twice in the recent past, she had not lodged any complaint with the police. A special team has been formed to solve this case," deputy commissioner of police Uma Shankar Dash said.
Amit Gupta, the husband of the injured woman, said the motive of the third attack on his wife does not indicate snatching.
"Anshu was stopped by the man, who was walking and stalking her from a distance. He suddenly pulled out a knife from his pocket and attacked her. He neither asked her for money or mobile phone nor attempted to snatch anything from her. In the last two attacks, the miscreants had attempted to snatch her belongings," said Amit, who is into steel business. Amit denied they had any enmity or rivalry with anyone. "I don't think the attack has anything to do with revenge or grudge," Amit said.
The stalker attacked the woman despite the movement of vehicles on the road during that time. In the CCTV footage, he was first seen running away after attacking the woman.
Then he turned back and returned to attack her again when she ran to the opposite side of the road for her safety.
As the incident left the commissionerate police red-faced, a number of people took to social media and questioned women's safety, especially during the lockdown.
